privacy

Short version: this site collects as little as possible. No ads, no trackers, no cookies, no social media buttons, no third-party scripts, and nothing about you that you don't choose to type yourself.

The long version follows, as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) asks.

who is responsible

This blog is written and run by werefin, a private individual, as a personal, non-commercial project. You can reach me at any time through the contact page, including for anything about your data.

what happens when you visit

Delivering the pages: the site is hosted by Cloudflare. To send you a page, Cloudflare's servers necessarily process technical data such as your IP address and browser type, and may keep short-lived security logs to protect against attacks. I don't receive, read or store any of this. Legal basis: legitimate interest in running a secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

View counts: each time a post is read, one is added to a counter for that post. Other pages aren't counted. The only thing stored is the post's address and a number, for example "this post: 42 views". Nothing about you is recorded, and nothing is stored on your device. This isn't personal data.

No cookies, nothing on your device: the site sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, and uses no fingerprinting, no analytics services and no tracking of any kind.

comments

If you comment, the site stores the comment text, the name you choose to give (optional; leave it empty to stay anonymous) and the time, rounded to the hour. No IP address, no email, nothing else.

Comments are only published after I've read them. Comments I don't approve are deleted automatically after 30 days. Published comments stay as long as the post does, unless you ask me to remove them.

Legal basis: your consent, given by posting (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw it at any time by asking for the comment to be deleted. Please don't write things in a comment that you wouldn't want public, such as personal details about yourself or others.

contact messages

If you write to me through the contact page, the site stores your message, the reply address you choose to give (optional) and the time, rounded to the hour. Only I can read messages; they are never published. Messages are deleted automatically after 12 months, or sooner if you ask.

Legal basis: your consent, given by sending, and my legitimate interest in reading and answering what you write (Art. 6(1)(a) and (f) GDPR).

anti-spam check

Before a comment or message is sent, your browser solves a small puzzle. The server keeps a random, single-use code for about 30 minutes so the same puzzle can't be reused. It isn't linked to you in any way.

who else is involved

Cloudflare, Inc. hosts the site and the small database where comments, messages and view counts are kept. Cloudflare acts as my data processor under its Data Processing Addendum. It runs a global network, so data may be processed outside the EU; such transfers are covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. The database itself is kept in the EU.

Nobody else receives any data. I don't sell, share or analyse anything.

your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • access the data I hold about you,
  • have it corrected or deleted,
  • restrict or object to its processing,
  • receive it in a portable format,
  • withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what happened before.

To use any of these rights, write to me through the contact page. Because comments and messages are anonymous, I can't link them to you on my own: tell me which post, roughly when, and quote part of the text, and I'll find it. I'll answer within one month.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority in the EU country where you live or work.

other things you should know

  • No automated decision-making or profiling takes place.
  • The site isn't aimed at children under 16.
  • To report a comment you believe is illegal or harmful, use the contact page and I'll review it promptly.
